Why LVP took over Greater St. Louis floors

Luxury vinyl plank outsells every other flooring category in the country now, and in this market it is not close. It reads as wood from a few feet away, it costs roughly half what solid oak costs installed, and it does not flinch at a dog, a toddler, or a wet mop. Veteran Flooring keeps Hallmark Floors, Portercraft, and Fusion boards on the racks at our Maryland Heights showroom so you can stand on them, drop a set of keys on them, and take a sample home before you commit.

The other reason is our basements. Nearly every house here has one, a lot of them are finished, and a fair number have taken water at some point. Rigid-core LVP goes straight down over concrete with no acclimation drama and no cupping when the room gets damp. After a storm season floods a lower level, the vinyl is usually what gets dried and saved. That is not a promise anybody can make about solid hardwood.

Reading a spec sheet without the sales pitch

Three numbers tell you most of what you need to know about an LVP product: the wear layer, the core, and the total thickness. Salespeople like to talk around them and sell you a name instead. We would rather hand you the sample and explain what each number actually does in your house. Here is the short version, and Erik will walk through it again with the real boards in your hands at the measure.

  • 12 to 20 mil wear layer - fine for bedrooms, rentals, and rooms nobody tracks mud through
  • 22 mil wear layer - the whole-home standard and what most of our customers choose
  • 28 to 30 mil wear layer - big dogs, busy back doors, and light commercial work
  • SPC stone-composite core - dense and rigid, the one we put on basement slabs
  • WPC wood-composite core - a little softer and warmer to walk on upstairs
  • 5mm to 8mm total thickness - thicker boards sound better and forgive more subfloor

Click-lock or glue-down

Click-lock planks float over the subfloor. They go down fast, they come up easily when one section gets damaged, and they are the right call for most homes and nearly every basement. Glue-down feels more solid, runs quieter, and holds up better across very large open rooms and commercial floors. We install both, and we will tell you which one your subfloor is asking for rather than which one is quicker for us. Stairs are their own conversation, and we cover that on our vinyl stair page.

Click-lock or glue-down

The part that decides how it looks in five years

Subfloor. That is the whole answer. A rigid plank spans a low spot instead of following it, and the joint over that gap is the one that separates. We grind, we patch, we check with a straightedge, and only then do we open a box. We also pull and reset baseboards, cut transitions to the doorway, and mill stair nosings to match the plank when the manufacturer does not offer one. From new construction out in O'Fallon to century-old joisted floors in the city, prep is what changes from job to job.

Luxury Vinyl Plank - frequently asked questions

It is the first thing we suggest down there. A rigid SPC core sits flat on concrete, needs no long acclimation, and survives a wet floor as long as the water gets out reasonably fast. We check the slab for moisture and flatness first and grind or patch where the pour is uneven, which is common in mid-county homes built in the sixties and seventies.

The wear layer resists scratching, but nothing is scratch-proof. Drag a loaded bookcase across a 12 mil floor and you will see a mark. With a big dog or a busy back door, spend the extra dollar on 22 mil or better and put felt under the furniture legs. Grit tracked in from a driveway does more damage than anything else, so a mat at the door beats any product upgrade.

A 22 mil floor in a normal household runs 20 to 25 years before it starts looking tired, and commercial-rated boards go longer. The failures we get called out to fix are almost never the vinyl itself. They are bad subfloor prep, a missing expansion gap, or a floating floor pinned down under a heavy kitchen island.

Yes. We offer financing through Hearth and Synchrony, and plenty of customers use it to move up a grade of board or do the whole main floor at once instead of a room at a time. Erik can put the monthly figure right next to the total on your written quote, so you are comparing real numbers instead of guessing.

Our own crew. Veteran Flooring is veteran-owned, Dale started it in 2015, and the people who show up are people we work with every week. You can read more about how the company got started. We send progress photos as the job moves so you know exactly where things stand while you are at work.

Usually, yes. A lot of St. Louis brick homes and mid-county ranches have red or white oak strip flooring sitting under old carpet. We pull up a corner, see how much wood is left above the nails, and sand with dust containment equipment. Before we commit to a color we test stains on your own floor, because oak in your light does not look like a sample in our showroom.
We do. We finance through Hearth and Synchrony, and you can apply before you pick a material so you know your budget while you shop. The application takes a few minutes and approval does not obligate you to anything. Call (314) 897-4383 and we will send you the link.
Our labor comes with a one-year workmanship warranty, and the flooring itself carries the manufacturer warranty that comes with the product you choose. If something is not sitting right, call the office or email veteranflooringstl@gmail.com and we will come look at it. Coming back to make it right is part of the job, not a favor.
