Usually yes. Most St. Louis homes built before 1940 have red or white oak strip flooring, and it was laid thick enough to sand several times. We pull back a corner of the carpet and the tack strip during the estimate and look at the boards, the gaps and any water staining, then tell you honestly whether refinishing or replacement is the better spend.
Carpet runs $2.75 to $7.50 per square foot installed with pad and haul-away. Laminate is $4 to $8, luxury vinyl plank $5 to $10, engineered hardwood $8 to $14, solid hardwood $9 to $16, and tile $8 to $18 depending on pattern and prep. Refinishing hardwood you already have is $3.50 to $6. A free in-home measure turns those ranges into one written number.
Waterproof luxury vinyl plank over a flat slab is the usual answer, with carpet tile as a strong second because damaged squares get swapped instead of tearing out a whole room. We check the slab for moisture first. If water is still finding its way in, that needs fixing before we install anything, and we will say so rather than take the job twice.
A single room of carpet or laminate is often one day. LVP across a main floor runs one to three days. Tile depends on the prep and the mortar cure. Refinishing is the long one: sand, stain and two to three coats usually means four to six days with the rooms off limits while the finish cures. You get the schedule in writing before we start.
