Vinyl on stairs, and why it works here

Stairs take more abuse than any other floor in the house. Basement steps get groceries, laundry baskets, wet boots, and everything a sump pump does not catch. Vinyl handles all of it - waterproof, scratch-resistant, and quieter than a bare hardwood tread. We wrap stairs in the same luxury vinyl plank you pick for the floor above or below, so the run reads as one continuous floor instead of an obvious transition.

It is a common request on the split-levels and ranches around Maryland Heights and mid-county, where a short flight down to a finished lower level sits right in the middle of the house. Carpet on those steps holds dirt and shows a traffic path within a couple of years. Vinyl does not, and it wipes clean with a damp cloth after a snowy week of boots going up and down.

Vinyl on stairs, and why it works here

Nosings are the whole job

Most vinyl manufacturers do not ship a stair nosing that matches their plank, which is why so many vinyl stairs end up with a metal strip screwed across the front edge. We handle it two ways: a factory nosing in the matching color when the line offers one, and a nosing we mill in-house out of the same plank when it does not. The front edge ends up the same grain and the same color as the tread, with no gap and no aluminum showing.

  • 20 and 30 mil wear layers, both rated for stair traffic
  • Micro-textured tread surface that keeps its grip when it is wet
  • Click-lock or glue-down, chosen by what your treads are made of
  • Risers wrapped in matching vinyl or painted white, your call

Installed so it does not squeak or lift

Vinyl stairs fail in two ways. The plank lifts at the nose because somebody trusted adhesive alone, or every step squeaks because nothing was done to the substrate first. We re-secure each tread to the stringer, skim any dished-out step flat, and set the plank in polyurethane construction adhesive with fasteners hidden under the nosing. Done that way, the staircase usually ends up quieter than it was the day before we started.

If your steps are carpeted now, we pull the carpet, pad, staples, and tack strip and look at what is underneath. Solid wood treads get leveled and covered. Particleboard or water-damaged treads get replaced first, which is common on basement runs that have taken water, and when the damage runs past the stairs our floor repair work covers that in the same visit rather than a second trip.

Count your steps before you call if you want a rough number in your head, since stairs price per tread and not per square foot. A straight basement run in a mid-county ranch is usually thirteen or fourteen. Better yet, set up a free in-home estimate and we will measure the run, look hard at every tread, and put one written price in front of you.

Vinyl Flooring Stairs - frequently asked questions

Less than a polyurethaned hardwood tread, which surprises people. Stair-rated plank has a micro-texture embossed into the wear layer that keeps its grip when it is wet, and it meets the same slip standards used on commercial floors. Socks on any hard stair are still socks on a hard stair, so if young kids or an older parent live in the house we can add tread strips.

Not over. We take the carpet, pad, staples, and tack strip off first, then look at every tread. Good solid treads get a quick level and the plank goes down on top. Soft, split, or water-damaged treads get replaced, and particleboard usually does. You hear what we find before we do the extra work, not after it shows up on the invoice.

They should be quieter than they were. Most stair squeaks come from a tread that has worked loose from the stringer over a few decades, so we screw and glue each one back down before any vinyl goes on. That fix stays fixed whether or not you end up liking the plank we put over it.

If the rest of your floor is oak and the stairs stay dry, hardwood stairs are a beautiful answer and we build plenty of them. For a basement run, a rental, or a house with dogs, vinyl is the more practical call and it costs less per tread. We will price both and let you decide, with no push in either direction.

Come by the showroom on Weldon Pkwy in Maryland Heights and put your hands on the samples, or read what customers have written on our reviews page. Dale has been running this crew since 2015, and stairs are where shortcuts show up fastest. We send photos as the run goes in so you can watch it come together while you are at work.

Usually, yes. A lot of St. Louis brick homes and mid-county ranches have red or white oak strip flooring sitting under old carpet. We pull up a corner, see how much wood is left above the nails, and sand with dust containment equipment. Before we commit to a color we test stains on your own floor, because oak in your light does not look like a sample in our showroom.
We do. We finance through Hearth and Synchrony, and you can apply before you pick a material so you know your budget while you shop. The application takes a few minutes and approval does not obligate you to anything. Call (314) 897-4383 and we will send you the link.
Our labor comes with a one-year workmanship warranty, and the flooring itself carries the manufacturer warranty that comes with the product you choose. If something is not sitting right, call the office or email veteranflooringstl@gmail.com and we will come look at it. Coming back to make it right is part of the job, not a favor.
