Natural Stone Tile, Set and Sealed the Slow Way

Stone is quarried, not printed, so no two crates arrive the same. Shade, veining and thickness vary inside a single lot, which means the layout has to be planned before anything gets bonded down. We dry-lay the whole floor first, shuffle pieces until the light and dark blend across the room instead of pooling in one corner, and only then start setting. Skip that hour and the floor looks patchy from the doorway, and there is no fixing it later without pulling tile.

We are also straight with people about what stone asks of you. Soft stones etch, porous stones stain, and both want sealing on a schedule. Every stone we install except dense granite gets an impregnating sealer on installation day. It soaks in rather than sitting on top, so the color and finish stay exactly as you picked them and water and oil stay out of the pores. After that, plan on a refresh every one to three years depending on traffic. In winter the habit that matters most is sweeping salt and grit at the door, because that abrasive is what dulls a polished surface first.

Stone can also be brought back. Scratches hone out, dull marble can be re-polished, and a chipped travertine tile can be filled or swapped. We keep notes on where each floor's stone came from, so a repair years later has a fighting chance at matching.
