Solid wood, one board straight through
Solid hardwood is exactly what it sounds like: a three-quarter inch board milled from one piece of wood, nailed into the subfloor, no core and no veneer. It is the floor most of the older houses around here were built with, and it is still what we install most on main and upper levels. Sanded and recoated every couple of decades, a solid floor outlasts the roof, the furnace and most of the people who walk across it.
We are a veteran-owned crew working out of Maryland Heights, and we install solid wood the same way every time. Moisture meter on the subfloor. Material sitting in the house for several days first. Cleats every eight inches. An expansion gap left at every wall and under every baseboard. Missouri summers push wood wide and January pulls it back again, and careful prep is what keeps that movement quiet.
What sits on our racks and what we can order
The showroom carries Hallmark Floors, Portercraft and Fusion in solid oak, maple, hickory and walnut, in both strip and plank widths, prefinished and unfinished. Unfinished is worth a look if you want a color nobody else on the block has, because we sand and stain it in place and there is no factory bevel between the boards. Stop in on a weekday between eight and five and stand on the samples instead of squinting at a photo of them.
Pricing on solid wood moves with species and grade far more than with brand. Clear white oak costs real money. A character grade red oak with knots and color variation costs less and hides family life better. We will lay both in front of you and let you feel the difference. If the number lands heavier than you planned this month, we offer financing through Hearth and the monthly payment is usually smaller than people expect.

Nail-down over a wood subfloor is the standard here, and most St. Louis homes give us exactly that: plywood or old pine over joists with a basement underneath. We check the joist spans, screw off the squeaks, flatten anything out of tolerance, then run the floor. Straight, diagonal, herringbone and chevron are all on the table. Patterned work takes longer and costs more in labor, and we put that difference in dollars in front of you before you commit.
Over a slab, solid wood needs a plywood subfloor glued and fastened down first, which adds height at every doorway and cost to the job. Plenty of the newer builds we work in around St. Charles and O'Fallon sit right on concrete like that. We walk the house before quoting and tell you plainly which method the structure will support and which one it will not.
Solid wood on the staircase
A staircase is the loudest ten square feet in a house, and it is almost entirely labor. Treads get scribed to the stringers, nosings get milled to match the floor, risers get cut clean, and none of that is forgiving of a rushed measurement. We do square-nosed treads, open-sided runs, winders and landings, and we finish them from the same stain batch as the floor so the two read as one surface. Real & Solid Hardwood Flooring - frequently asked questions
Five or six times, realistically, on a three-quarter inch board with a decent amount of wood above the tongue. For most families that works out to a sanding every fifteen or twenty years. We check the remaining thickness at a floor vent before quoting any refinishing work, so nobody pays us to sand a floor that has nothing left to give.
No. Concrete carries moisture and there is nothing up there to nail into. We would build a plywood subfloor over the slab first, which adds height and cost, or steer you toward engineered hardwood, which glues down flat and stays put. Below grade, engineered is the only wood floor we will install.
Prefinished is faster and you walk on it the day it goes down, with a small bevel between each board. Site-finished is flat edge to edge, takes any custom color you want, and needs a few extra days for the coats to dry. Older homes with existing oak often look better site-finished because the new and the old blend into one floor.
We do not recommend it. Heat cycling under a solid board pulls moisture out of the wood and you end up with gaps every winter. Engineered handles radiant heat much better. If you want solid anyway, we specify narrow boards and quartersawn material to limit the movement, and we set expectations honestly before the order goes in.

Usually, yes. A lot of St. Louis brick homes and mid-county ranches have red or white oak strip flooring sitting under old carpet. We pull up a corner, see how much wood is left above the nails, and sand with dust containment equipment. Before we commit to a color we test stains on your own floor, because oak in your light does not look like a sample in our showroom.
