Carpet tile comes in the same fibers broadloom does. Nylon for wear, polyester for softness and stain resistance, and heavier commercial constructions where carts and chairs are part of daily life. Pile runs from a flat, dense loop that reads as office-grade to a textured cut that is hard to tell from rolled carpet once the room is furnished. How we install it
Concrete gets tested for moisture before a single tile is set, because a slab that reads high will fail the adhesive no matter how good the product is. From there we clean and skim the subfloor flat, chalk the grid off the center of the room so the cut tiles land evenly at both walls, and set the field with releasable pressure-sensitive adhesive or full glue-down if the traffic calls for it. Yes, and that is where most of it ends up. We run a moisture test on the concrete first to confirm the slab sits inside the manufacturer's limits. If it reads high we either move to a vapor-barrier system or deal with the source before installing anything. Skipping that test is how a floor comes loose a year later, and it is a bad way to save an hour.
For a week or two you may pick them out if you go looking. Foot traffic settles the pile and the grid disappears into the room. Setting the tiles quarter-turn breaks up the direction of the pile and hides the joints from day one, which is usually what we recommend in a house.
You lift it and set a spare. We leave attic stock from the same dye lot with every job for exactly that. Most tiles can also be carried to a laundry sink, rinsed, dried and put back down. If a stain will not come out at all, pull a tile from under the couch and put the damaged one in its place.
Carpet tile is warmer, quieter and cheaper to repair. Waterproof luxury vinyl plank is the better answer if the basement has taken standing water more than once, since it dries out and goes back down. Plenty of our lower-level jobs use both: plank near the walkout and the mechanical room, carpet tile in the finished rooms.

Usually, yes. A lot of St. Louis brick homes and mid-county ranches have red or white oak strip flooring sitting under old carpet. We pull up a corner, see how much wood is left above the nails, and sand with dust containment equipment. Before we commit to a color we test stains on your own floor, because oak in your light does not look like a sample in our showroom.
