Wall tile is where the cuts show
On a floor, most of the tricky cuts hide under a toe kick or a piece of trim. On a wall, everything happens at eye level - the cut around an outlet, the last piece where tile meets cabinet, the corner miter, the line where the field stops at the ceiling. There is nowhere to bury sloppy work. We install wall tile across the St. Louis area for kitchen backsplashes, shower and tub surrounds, laundry splash walls, fireplace faces and the occasional full accent wall.
The racks at the showroom cover the range: plain subway, handmade zellige with its uneven glaze, large-format porcelain panels, marble and travertine, glass, and the ribbed and fluted tile that keeps showing up in primary baths. If you want an accent inside the field, a glass or stone mosaic in a niche or a band is usually the cheapest way to make a wall look designed rather than tiled.

What a tiled wall does for a room
A backsplash or a surround is one of the few upgrades that changes how a room reads without touching the cabinets, the counters or the layout. Most of them finish in two or three days. We do a steady run of them in Creve Coeur and the inner suburbs, where the kitchens are solid but the tile behind the range has stopped doing the house any favors.
- Kitchen backsplashes - keeps grease and water off the drywall and finishes the room
- Shower and tub surrounds - waterproofed behind the tile, easy to clean, good for decades
- Powder room feature walls - a big look in the smallest room in the house
- Fireplace surrounds - heat-safe tile, including real natural stone when you want the weight of it
- Laundry and mudroom splash walls - drywall stays dry behind the sink and the boot rack

First we check the wall for plumb and flat. An eighth-inch bow across four feet telegraphs through the tile as a visible wave, so we shim, float or skim the substrate until it is true. Then we dry-lay the pattern to see where the cuts land - centered over the range, balanced at the corners, full pieces where the eye goes first. Ten minutes of layout is the difference between a backsplash that looks planned and one that looks like it ran out of room.
Wet walls get a full waterproofing membrane behind the tile, every time. Niches are framed and waterproofed before a single piece goes up, curbs get wrapped, and the pan is sloped properly instead of patched to grade. Cuts at outlets and valves are trimmed by hand so the cover plates sit flat against the tile. We grout, seal or run epoxy where it makes sense, then walk the whole job with you. The finish work is what people tend to remember, and you can read a few of those notes.

Wall tile pricing in Greater St. Louis
Installed pricing - tile, mortar, grout, basic wall prep and labor. Custom niches, benches and full waterproofing systems are quoted on their own line.
| Option | Typical price | Notes |

| Subway tile backsplash | $14 - $19 / sq ft | Kitchens and bath backsplashes |
| Patterned, handmade or zellige | $19 - $27 / sq ft | Uneven edges take extra setting time |
| Full three-wall shower surround | $3,500 - $7,000 total | Waterproofing and one niche included |
| Marble, travertine and limestone walls | $24 - $36 / sq ft | Heavier tile, slower setting |
A kitchen backsplash is usually a one or two day job. A full shower surround runs five to seven days start to finish.
Wall Tiles - frequently asked questions
Most kitchens land between $1,200 and $2,800 installed, tile included. The variables are square footage, how many outlets and windows break up the field, and whether the tile is a straightforward subway or something handmade that has to be hand-fit. Book a free in-home estimate and you get one flat number for the job, not a per-hour guess.
We waterproof them. Every shower we build gets a membrane system behind the tile, a properly sloped pre-pitch under the pan, and sealed corners and curbs. Tile and grout are not waterproof on their own, whatever the box says - the system behind them is what keeps water out of the framing. We do not set shower tile without it, on any job.
For a dry backsplash away from the sink, yes, once we scuff and prime it. For a shower or any wall that gets sprayed, no - the drywall comes out and cement backer board or a foam tile backer goes in. Tile set over drywall in a wet area is the single most common failure we get called out to tear apart and rebuild.
We bring grout samples to the estimate and hold them against your tile before install day. Tone-on-tone makes the lines disappear and the field read as one surface. Contrast grout puts the pattern forward, which is back in style on subway tile. Darker grout also hides more in a working kitchen, which matters more than most people expect it to.
