Mosaic Tile for Shower Floors, Niches and Backsplashes

Mosaic is the detail people notice after everything else is finished. A shower floor in penny round, a marble band above the range, a niche lined in glass - it takes a bathroom or kitchen from finished to considered, and it usually costs less than people expect because the areas are small. We set glass, ceramic, porcelain and stone mosaics in hex, penny, herringbone and basketweave, and we will lay out a custom pattern if you bring us a photo of one.

There is a practical side too. On a shower floor, mosaic is the correct tile, not just the pretty one. The small pieces follow the slope to the drain without lipping up at the edges, and the extra grout lines give you traction under bare wet feet. Anywhere a floor pitches, the smaller the tile the better it sits. It pairs naturally with a full tile floor running through the rest of the room.

Mosaic arrives on mesh or paper sheets about a foot square, and the seams between those sheets are where amateur work shows up. If the spacing at a sheet edge is even slightly off, your eye picks up a grid across the whole wall and cannot unsee it. We dry-lay every sheet, pull individual pieces by hand to break the joint, and adjust spacing tile by tile as we go. It is slow, and it is the entire reason a mosaic reads as continuous.

Glass has its own rules. We cut it wet with a diamond blade rather than snapping it, use white mortar underneath so the color reads true instead of muddy, and grout it with an unsanded product that will not scratch the faces. Stone mosaics get sealed like any other stone. Small jobs like these are easy to fold into a bigger project, so mention it when you book your estimate.
