Stairs take more traffic per square foot than anything else in a house, and they are the first thing anyone sees walking through the door. Veteran Flooring builds and finishes hardwood staircases all over the St. Louis area, from tight straight runs in city two-flats to open landings in newer subdivisions. Carpet comes off, treads and risers go on, nosings get milled to match, and the whole run gets stained and coated so it belongs with the rest of the floor.
It is one crew and one schedule. We are not handing your staircase to a subcontractor and hoping it goes well. The people who measured the job are the people who show up to do it, and if something needs a second pass we come back and take care of it. That habit is most of what our customers write about.
Solid treads or engineered treads
Solid oak, maple and hickory treads are the durable choice and can be sanded and recoated more than once over the life of the house. Engineered treads make sense when we are matching an existing engineered floor or working over a concrete landing. They stay dimensionally stable, they are less likely to develop a squeak, and once the finish is on nobody standing three feet away can tell the difference.
The other question is retrofit versus rebuild. If the treads hiding under your carpet are solid lumber, we can often skin them with new hardwood and keep the existing structure. If they are particleboard, which is common in the seventies and eighties builds around Florissant and Hazelwood, they come out and get replaced. We pull a corner of carpet and look before we put a number on anything.

Day one is demolition. Carpet, pad, staples and tack strip come out, the staircase gets vacuumed clean, and we shim or screw any loose stringers so the finished stairs do not talk back at you. Day two is install: treads, risers and nosings set in adhesive with finish nails, then filled and sanded flush so no fastener shows. Day three is stain and coats. Most homes are back to normal traffic the next morning, with full cure in about a week.
We work out the traffic plan with you first, since plenty of houses have exactly one staircase. Usually that means finishing late in the day, or splitting the run so half of it stays walkable overnight. Bring it up during your free in-home estimate and we will schedule around the kids, the dogs and the hours you need to be in and out.
Making the stairs and the floor agree
Most people want the staircase to disappear into the floor rather than announce itself. We pull from the same stain batch and the same sheen we used on the hardwood, which is easiest when the stairs and the floor happen in the same visit. If your floors were done years ago, we sample against them until we are within a shade. When the old floor is tired anyway, refinishing it alongside the stairs brings everything to one color for less than most people guess.
Deliberate contrast is a legitimate choice too. Dark treads with painted white risers is a look we do constantly in Webster Groves and Kirkwood, and it suits a center-hall Colonial or a 1920s Tudor. We mock it up on sample boards first so you are choosing from something real sitting on your own steps, not from a picture on a phone.

Hardwood Stairs - frequently asked questions
The carpet, pad, staples and tack strip come out first, then we look at what is underneath. Solid lumber treads can usually take new hardwood right on top. Particleboard treads get replaced as part of the job. Either way you find out at the estimate rather than partway through, because we check before we quote.
A fourteen step run takes two to three days from demolition to final coat. You can use them carefully the next morning. When a house has only one staircase we time the finishing around your schedule, and we will tell you straight if one night somewhere else would make your week easier.
That is the goal on most jobs. We brush stain samples onto the same species your floor is, let them dry in your hallway, and you pick in your own light at your own pace. Within a shade or two is realistic. Dead-on identical usually means sanding the floor and the stairs together as one project.
A satin or matte polyurethane is no slicker than any other hard surface, though socks on any wood stair are a bad idea. For older dogs we can add low-profile grip strips near the nosing, or a runner down the center. Some families go with carpeted stairs for exactly that reason.

Usually, yes. A lot of St. Louis brick homes and mid-county ranches have red or white oak strip flooring sitting under old carpet. We pull up a corner, see how much wood is left above the nails, and sand with dust containment equipment. Before we commit to a color we test stains on your own floor, because oak in your light does not look like a sample in our showroom.
