Rigid plank is thin and it telegraphs. Any hump or dip in the subfloor eventually shows as a bounce or a clicking joint. Yes, when it is installed right. The plank itself is waterproof, so a sump failure or a heavy rain event will not ruin it the way it would carpet or laminate. What matters is prep: a flat, ground slab, a proper vapor barrier, and expansion room at the walls. We test slab moisture before quoting glue-down and will tell you plainly if a room needs drainage work first.
Not the way they scratch hardwood. The wear layer is what protects the printed image, so a twenty mil product in a house with big dogs is a different experience than a thin twelve mil builder product. Grit tracked in from driveways and gravel does more damage than nails, so mats at the garage door and regular sweeping do most of the work of keeping it looking new.
Sometimes, but we usually recommend against it. Old sheet vinyl telegraphs its seams, and tile telegraphs grout lines through a thin rigid plank. Removing the old floor also keeps heights matched with adjoining rooms and lets us inspect and correct the subfloor. Demolition and haul-away is quoted as its own line item so you can see exactly what that step costs.
LVP is waterproof and laminate is water-resistant at best, so anywhere near a kitchen sink, mudroom or basement, plank wins. Laminate typically feels harder and more like real wood underfoot and costs less per square foot. If budget drives the decision and the room stays dry, laminate is a fair choice.
