Laminate flooring in Kirkwood, MO

Laminate makes sense in a Kirkwood house when the budget is real and the room takes abuse. A rec room above grade, a second-floor hall in a rental near Manchester Road, a whole first floor in a house being readied to sell before the spring market. Modern laminate is a photographic layer under a hard aluminum-oxide wear surface, and the good ones resist scratching better than an oil-finished hardwood ever manages to.

It is also the sensible answer where hardwood would be a mistake. Kirkwood dogs, kids coming in from the fields at Kirkwood Park with cleats still on, a hallway that catches winter salt off the driveway. Laminate shrugs at all of that. We do not put it below grade in this area, because basements here take water and a laminate core swells when they do. Above grade it performs for years.

Underlayment does two jobs: it softens the sound and, over concrete, it blocks vapor. Missouri summers push moisture up through a basement or garage-level slab even when the surface reads dry, so we use a barrier rated for it. Expansion space is the other non-negotiable. Laminate grows during an August humidity spell, and a floor pinched tight against drywall will peak somewhere in the middle of the room.

Erik measures each room, straightedges the floor to find out what leveling it will need, checks how the laminate will meet the hardwood or tile in the next room, and talks through AC rating, thickness and color. Samples go home with you. The quote comes back as one written number, and it does not move unless you change the scope of the work.

The boxes arrive at the house a couple of days early so the material sits at room temperature. On install day we protect the path, tear out and haul the old floor, prep and level, roll out underlayment, then lay planks with proper expansion space and undercut casings so the floor runs under the trim. Base shoe and transitions go on last. Most rooms are walkable the same evening.
